What is telepractice?

Telepractice refers to online speech-language services, provided by a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist, through a secure HIPAA compliant video platform. Through this online platform, the client can interact face to face with the therapist, just as they would for an in-person session. Telepractice may also be referred to as "telehealth", "telespeech", "online speech therapy", and "speech teletherapy".

Benefits

  • Comfort

Enjoy therapy from the comfort of your home. Your child may be more receptive to therapy in the familiarity and safety of their home environment. Also, the ease of scheduling and convenience of staying at home has been ideal for parents.

  • Convenience

Eliminate the weekly expense and time associated with commuting to and from in-person services. Finding a convenient time for therapy is much easier when there is no commute to account for. Distance is also no longer an obstacle to getting access to quality speech therapy.

  • Health

Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, client and clinician can safely engage in therapy, without the use of masks. Masks can muffle sounds, making it more difficult to hear speech and higher pitched sounds or voices. In addition, many families including those with medically fragile children, feel more comfortable connecting online as this delivery model allows all participants to stay safe and healthy. Fewer cancellations due to illnesses result in increased consistency of services, creating positive treatment outcomes.

  • Progress

Parents can be more involved in the therapeutic process with their child and gain the necessary skills and strategies to work on speech goals outside of therapy. Strategies and skills that are taught through tele-therapy are easily incorporated and practiced at home, leading to faster progress!

Coaching

One-on-one communication coaching is available, to give parents additional support and tools needed to work on and improve their child’s communication skills at home. Providing an environment enriched with communication opportunities is beneficial to the development of speech and language skills.
